THE PRELUDE
George Kensall and Charles Lawrence are both from middle class families from Knightsbridge in London and they have known each other all their lives. They went to the same schools, had the same friends and have similar interests. They even share the same dream to be paid actors upon the stage which has led them to this point in their lives.
Charles has come through a very difficult time and only three years ago lost his beloved wife, Catherine whilst giving birth to his son Jack. He still misses her dearly.
George is married to Elizabeth who works as a nurse in London. They have two wonderful children, Joe who is three and Margaret who is five.
Now both 28 years old, finally positive things are beginning to happen for them. Today, they have received news of winning substantial parts in a major West End Theatre production.
As they sit there in the restaurant, reveling in their news and grinning happily over what they have achieved a voice from the radio interrupts their mood. Up until now both have been oblivious to everything else, but this voice, instantly recognizable cuts through with a message that is about to change not just their lives, but everybody’s. It is the Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain who with a saddened heart informs the nation "This country is at war with Germany". It is the 3rd September 1939.
Charles and George enlist into the army in May of 1940. Several months later, during the first onslaught of the German air raids over London, George's home is demolished. Both his wife and daughter are killed. Jack and Joe who were also in the house escape with minor injuries and are evacuated to a boarding school in Cheshire.
THE STORY
Kindred Spirits opens in September of 1944 and two weeks after the Allied landings of Normandy. It is one mile inland from Lion-sur-Mer where two soldiers, George and Charles are trying desperately to save the lives of some comrades who have been cut off from their troops. They have been pinned down by German snipers and have little or no chance of surviving without help. George and Charles simply can't stand by to watch and in a moment of frustration with selfless heroism they try to draw the Germans fire to themselves, thereby giving their comrades a chance to escape. In doing so they lose their own lives.
It is several months later before the news reaches Cheshire in England and St.Annes Convent School where Jack Lawrence and Joe Kensall, now eight years old are boarding.
As the nuns read tearfully through another familiar telegram they prepare themselves to deliver bad news to two more of their children. Jack and Joe are sent into an immediate state of shock. Once again their world has been turned upside down. Thoughts and feelings rush through their mind that they cannot grasp hold of nor comprehend. Disbelief, denial, grief, anger and so many questions ?
Inconsolable, they tear themselves away from the nuns to be left alone. With no family left to take care of them what will they do? Slowly and gradually their tears subside as they begin to accept that they have no one left to turn to but each other and although they do not yet realize it, their grief will unite them with a bond that will last the rest of their lives.
Jack, hesitantly begins to talk of their fathers and slowly Joe responds. Jack tries so hard to put on a brave face and encourages Joe to talk some more. He then begins to talk of the dream that their fathers had, to be famous actors in the theatre world when suddenly it comes to him. This dream will now become their own. They look into the future to see how wonderful it will be and their imaginations take them there. They will be actors, they will be famous and finally they will be happy.
Vowing never to be left alone again they pledge lifelong friendship and embark on a quest to fulfil their dream.
